TOURS OF THE WEST OF IRELAND

Galway - Connemara - The Burren - Shannon - Kylemore Abbey - Galway Crystal

HookerGalway city, known as the ‘city of the tribes’ with its seaside suburb of Salthill, is an important tourist centre and a gateway to the scenic areas of the county.

In the 1400’s, there began in Galway the rule of the 'Tribes', as the leading fourteen families were called. Their names were Athy, Blake, Bodkin, Browne, Darcy, Deane, ffont, French, Joyce, Kirwan, Lynch, Martin, Morris, and Skerritt

Members of these families served as Burgesses, and as Mayors of Galway up to the capture of Galway by a Cromwellian army in 1652.

The country's cultural heartland where rich heritage and traditions thrive with music, dance and the Gaeltacht. Galway's a great costal place to visit from the buzzing bohemian city itself to the quiet magical landscape of Connemara. Galway is a city, a county, and an experience to be savoured and remembered.

Knock Day Tour

The Knock Shrine & Cong Tour departs Galway every Saturday and Sunday daily at 9:30 am. It departs from the Aquarium in Salthill and the Galway Cathedral.
You will have 40 minutes to wander the village of Cong, famous for being the location for the 1950s classic movie, ‘The Quiet Man’- or simply have a coffee on the edge of Lough Corrib – Irelands Largest Lake.
Then on to one of our National treasure’s, Knock Shrine, which is a unique and sacred place, set in over 100 acres of landscaped gardens. That offer’s a peaceful, contemplative space in which to pray, to reflect and to reconnect.
The story of Knock, as we know it today, began on the evening of the 21st of August 1879 when Our Lady appeared at the gable of the church in the company of St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist. Fifteen local people gave their testimonies to an official Commission of Enquiry and their accounts were found to be trustworthy and satisfactory. In 1936, a second Commission of Enquiry was held to interview the two witnesses still alive in Ireland at that time. In 1937, the youngest witness, John Curry gave his testimony in New York.
For 140 years, visitors have come to Knock from all over the world, including Pope John Paul ll and Mother Teresa of Calcutta.
